Noah Dewar

Independent Service Dog Trainer & Consultant

I help owner-trainers build reliable, confident service dog teams, drawing directly on my own experience training Kiara from puppyhood through full task work and public access across multiple countries.

About

I'm an independent service dog trainer and consultant specialising in owner-training. I trained Kiara (the husky-mix you see on this page) from the age of two months through full public access and task work, and that hands-on experience is the basis of everything I offer.

I work independently by design: it means every handler I work with gets guidance built around their specific dog, disability, and lifestyle, rather than a curriculum developed for someone else. That same individualized approach shaped how I trained Kiara, and it's the standard I bring to every consultation and training session.

Kiara is trained as a medical response dog, performing a specific physiological-cue detection task that required precise shaping and daily reinforcement over many months to reach reliability. She also works across borders. We've navigated access rights, airline documentation, and public access in multiple countries. That real-world experience shapes how I help handlers prepare for the full range of environments a working service dog team actually encounters.

Training Philosophy

A service dog demonstrating calm public access behavior

Effective service dog training requires balancing the handler's medical needs with the dog's well-being. My approach is rooted in clear communication and mutual respect.

  • Positive Reinforcement: Utilizing reward-based methods to build a dog that is eager to work and learns without fear or force.
  • Ethical Owner-Training: Empowering handlers with the knowledge and mechanics to advocate for their dogs while achieving high-level results.
  • Public Safety: Prioritizing neutrality and safety above all else when operating in public spaces.
  • Handler Partnership: Fostering a deeply bonded team where the dog and handler operate as a seamless, communicative unit.
  • Individualized Plans: Recognizing that no two disabilities, and no two dogs, are identical. Training must adapt to the team.

Experience

  • Owner-Trained from Puppyhood

Trained Kiara from two months old through full task work and public access. Managed the complete arc from early socialization and foundational obedience through complex behavior shaping, without the structure of a program or organization.

  • Medical Response Task Development

Shaped and proofed a multi-step physiological-cue detection task over many months of daily reinforcement, building the kind of reliable, unprompted response that medical alert work requires.

  • Domestic Public Access

Navigated public access across the United States in demanding real-world environments: bars, restaurants, crowded street festivals, and a multitude of transit systems. Beyond formal public access, Kiara has been proofed in some of the most physically demanding environments a working dog can encounter including multi-day wilderness backpacking trips and via ferrata routes in the Italian Dolomites.

  • International Access and Airline Experience

Managed service dog documentation and logistics across six countries (the United States, Canada, Colombia, Spain, France, Switzerland, and Italy). Kiara has completed 40+ flights with Delta, American, Alaska, Frontier, Iberia, and Air Canada.
